PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE SERIES

We will be putting on a series of product knowledge sessions throughout the winter.. Your input would be appreciated. The venue of the session will depend on how much interest there is.. If you have another product you would like to see on this list, please post it under this comment. Each session will include a continental breakfast and some giveaways.. This spring we will also be having a couple of BBQ's, spot lighting our in-stock decking.. (no Trex this year).. Merry Christmas all!

HARD TIMES FOR TOP QUALITY SUBS

The unprecedented amount of building that has happened in the last number of years in our state has attracted sub-contractors from all over the country (and other countries) to flood the market and lower wages for guys that do business honestly.. Partly due to large builders (some of which have gone bankrupt) demanding unrealistic prices for large amounts of work.. Now with the large builders not building, the custom home and large remodel market is being flooded with these low wage, illegal businesses.. leaving honest, tax paying, high quality sub-contractors hung out to dry.. One of the tricks I have seen is a business owner, lets call him Bob, goes and meets with a general and quotes the job promising oversight and involvement in the project.. Bob then turns around and subs out his sub work to a group doing business out of there station wagon for 1/2 the price.. Bob then goes hunting and never even visits the job after that unless the general for some reason is holding back payment for work to be corrected (almost always). All that said, if you are a general looking for sub-contract work.. stick with the guys that you know and trust.. do not be tempted by the low bid guy.. There could be a reason that one guy is $9 a sq ft and the other guy is $5... 9 times out of ten it isn't the $9 dollar guy taking advantage.. The $9 guy has skilled people working for him on the books and has to pay a livable wage.. I know and have a relationship with a good amount of quality, honest contractors (some of which are listed below on this blog).. Negotiate with them, don't leave them out to dry.. Force the $5 guy out of town.. Salespeople everywhere will be happy, and you will have peace of mind that you are helping the US economy and empoying honest people.. Thats my rant for the day..
